Rekha Menon Joins the Un-employed Group

We, the technologists usually go straight to the first floor of Charutha, after casting attendance with Rachana. We go to the kitchen for an extra tea, or to chat with the "ground guys" such as Biju, Gireesh, Swami etc. Prasanna Madam was always busy, and considered us as "jus kids."

One day, while going to kitchen, we saw a girl, drooping down on the table and writing something in Malayalam. Keeping our muscles tight, we went out of kitchen and had tea on the open back-yard. Then appears the same girl... may be one of the tallest and thinnest   I have ever seen .In typical Trichur accent, she introduced herself as Rekha Menon, Daughter of Sunny Menon..  now joined as production executive. Now assisting Mohanan Sir (N. Mohanan). He had given her a task to review the entries in a Drama festival held last week... within few minutes she become the centre of gravity of Charutha office.

Although there were other "Communications" people in Charutha, such as Kottukappalli, Chintha Ravi, Menon Sir, Sujamol etc, they used to keep a distance from us, the Satcom people. But Rekha used to mingle with us  and often got firing from Mohanan sir for delayed dead-lines. One of the passions introduced by Rekha was, smuggling Lactogen from kitchen and eating it raw at the back-yard.

ഇതുവരെ എഴുതിയതില്‍നിന്നും ഞങ്ങള്‍ തിരുവനന്ത പുരത്ത്  വെറുതെ ഇരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു  എന്നൊരു തോന്നല്‍ കാണും. എന്നാല്‍ അങ്ങനെ അല്ല. 

രാവിലെ ചായ കുടി കഴിഞ്ഞു ഞങ്ങള്‍ സര്‍വ്വേ ചെയ്യാന്‍ പോകും.  ഇടപ്പഴഞ്ഞി, വഴുതക്കാട്, കവടിയാര്‍  അമ്പലമുക്ക്‌, 

കരമന തുടങ്ങി  പിടിപി നഗര്‍ വരെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ സര്‍വ്വേ  നടത്തും.  ഉച്ചക്ക് ഊണ് കഴിഞ്ഞു ഓഫീസില്‍ ഏത്തും.

കത്തി വെപ്പ്പു,  ഉച്ച ഉറക്കം, മാപ്പ് വരക്കല്‍ എന്നീ കലാപരിപാടികള്‍.

റഷ്യ യില്‍ നിന്ന് കൊണ്ടുവന്ന ഡിഷ്‌ ആന്റിന ഉപയോഗിച്ച് എക്രാന്‍ ഉപഗ്രഹത്തിനെ അവഹിക്കല്‍   ഒരു സ്ഥിരം പരിപാടി ആയിരുന്നു.

  തരംഗ തീവ്രത യും വിറ്റ്‌ സും   (Vertical ഇന്റെര്‍വല്‍ ടെസ്റ്റ്‌ സിഗ്നല്‍) സിങ്കും  

ക്യൂ സിഗ്നലും ലോഗ് ചെയ്യുന്നതും  ഞങ്ങളുടെ പതിവായിരുന്നു.  

PRS നായര്‍ സര്‍, കെന്‍ എന്നിവരോടൊപ്പം    ER&DC , ദൂര ദര്സന്‍   എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും പോകും.   

എന്നിട്ടും ബോര്‍ അടിച്ചാല്‍ നേരെ മേരിലാന്ദ് സ്റ്റുഡിയോയില്‍ പോകും. അവിടെ പലപല ഷൂട്ടിംഗ് നടക്കുന്നു.  ശശികുമാര്‍ സര്‍, മോഹനന്‍ സര്‍, കെന്‍, കൊട്ടുകാപ്പള്ളി എന്നിവര്‍ അവിടെ കാണും. പൂമരക്കൊമ്പ്, കോമിക്കോള, നാടകം എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രധാന പരിപാടികള്‍.

രചന  "ഉണരുനരു ...  ഉണ്ണി പൂവേ" എന്ന പാട്ടും  അമച്ചല്‍ രവി ബാലികുടീരങ്ങളും ആന്റോ പാപ്പി അപ്പചായും  പാടുന്നതിനു ഞങ്ങള്‍ മേല്‍ നോട്ടം വഹിച്ചു.   

കോമി കോള യില്‍ നാദിര്‍ ഷയും അഭിയും  ആയിരുന്നു പ്രധാന താരങ്ങള്‍. അന്ന് അവരാണ് കൊമഡി രാജാക്കന്മാര്‍.  കൂടെ പൊക്കം   കുറഞ്ഞ  ഒരു പയ്യനും  കാണും.  ഒരു പൊട്ടിയ ചെരിപ്പുമായി അഭി നടക്കുന്നതും അഭിക്കു കാലിനു എന്ത് ഗുരുതര രോഗമാണെന്ന്  കണ്ടു നില്‍കുന്ന   രണ്ടു  ഡോക്ടര്‍ മാര്‍     തര്‍ക്കിക്കുന്നതും ഞങ്ങള്‍ മേല്‍ നോട്ടം നടത്തിയ പരിപാടി ആണ്. 

അന്ന് കണ്ട ആ പയ്യന്‍ വളര്‍ന്നു  വളരെ വലുതായി.  ജനപ്രിയ സൂപ്പര്‍ താരമായി. അതെ.. നമ്മുടെ ദിലിപ് തന്നെ ആ പയ്യന്‍.

കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം ഏഷ്യാനെറ്റ്‌  അവാര്‍ഡ്‌ നിശയില്‍ ഞാനും ഒരു    ഏഷ്യാനെറ്റ്‌  കുടുംബാംഗം ആണ് എന്ന് ദിലിപ്   പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍  സത്യത്തില്‍ എനിക്കും ഉണ്ടായി രോമാഞ്ചം.

End of March 1993.  The situation become very tensed in Corp. office - i.e. Charutha. There could be some sanctions or  black-listing or similar action from the financial institutions unless we pay back the overdrawn Over draft!!!!.

Paul sir and other heavy-heads called Russia (Dr. Raji Menon was still settled at Moscow), but no positive response. The back-yard rumour is, Dr. told the local management to solve it by themselves.

The day we expected to be the D-Day, we entered Charutha with crossed fingers, but the mood inside was upbeat. It seems some magic happened overnight. M/s. Videocon had transfered enough cash to make us running. And the magician behind this was Mr.  N.Gopalakrishnan, adoringly called Chettan by all of us, and commonly known as Tandem Gopalakrishnan.
