CUT-AWAY SHOT TO ERNAKULAM

ഒരു സുപ്രഭാതം. സ്ഥലം ഏഷ്യാനെറ്റ്‌ ഓഫീസ്, ഓള്‍ഡ്‌ തേവര റോഡ്‌ എറണാകുളം.

സുപ്രഭാതം ജയശങ്കര്‍ സര്‍ ഓഫീസില്‍ വരുന്നത് വരെ മാത്രം. പിന്നെ ഒരു പുകില്‍ ആണ്. സാറിന്റെ മുറിയിലെ സുപ്രഭാതം പുറത്തേക്കും വ്യാപിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ പതിയെ പലരും ആ 

മുറിയിലേക്ക് എത്തിനോക്കി. കണ്ടവര്‍   കണ്ടവര്‍ ഞെട്ടി. സാറിന്റെ കസേരയില്‍ നല്ല ചൂടന്‍ പട്ടിക്കാട്ടം.

അന്ന് ഒരു വീടിന്റെ വശത്തായാണ്  ഓഫീസ്. വീട്ടില്‍ ഒരു ഉഗ്രന്‍ പട്ടിയും ഉണ്ട്. തുറന്നു വിട്ടാല്‍ അവന്‍ ഏഷ്യാനെറ്റ്‌ ഓഫീസില്‍ ആണ്. പക്ഷെ ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു അക്രമം ആരും പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചില്ല. " അവന്‍ അവന്റെ കക്കൂസ് കൃത്യമായി കണ്ടു പിടിച്ചു എന്ന് ആരും പറഞ്ഞില്ല, ഒരു പക്ഷെ ഓര്‍ത്തു കാണും.

" ഈ മുന്‍വാതില്‍ ഒരിക്കലും തുറന്നു ഇടരുതെന്നു ഞാന്‍ എന്നും പറയുന്നതല്ലേ.. ഇപ്പം കണ്ടില്ലേ.. എല്ലാത്തിനെയും ഞാന്‍ തൂക്കിയെടുത്തു ഏറിയും.. ...".  സര്‍ തുടര്‍ന്ന് കൊണ്ടേയിരുന്നു.

" ഇനി എല്ലാവരും കൂടി ഇത് വൃത്തിയാക്കു... സര്‍ പറഞ്ഞത് കേട്ടു എല്ലാവരും പിറകോട്ടു വലിഞ്ഞു. അപ്പോള്‍ റിന്ടു മുന്നോട്ട് വന്നു ആ സാധനം കയ്യില്‍ എടുത്തു. പിന്നെ ഒന്നും സംഭവിക്കാത്തത്  പോലെ പുറത്തേക്കു നടന്നു. പിന്നെ ഒരു കൂട്ടച്ചിരി ആയിരുന്നു പുറത്ത്‌. സിംഗപ്പൂരില്‍ നിന്നും പ്രത്യേകം വരുത്തിച്ച fake dog poop
ആയിരുന്നത്രെ ആ പട്ടിക്കാട്ടം.

അന്ന് പി. ആര്‍ ഗോപാലന്‍ ആയിരുന്നു വി. പി. മാര്‍ക്കറ്റിംഗ്. അമ്പിളി മദാം ഏരിയ മാനെജേര്‍. സ്ടീവി യുടെ
പിന്നില്‍ ശ്യാം, കൃഷ്ണകുമാര്‍, പ്രദീപ്‌, റാം കുമാര്‍, പുരുഷോത്തമന്‍ എന്നിങ്ങനെ സാങ്കേതിക വിഭാഗം. ഏതായാലും ഇതോടെ
രിന്റുവിനു തിരുവനന്തപുറത്തേക്കു  സ്ഥലം മാറ്റം കിട്ടി. ജയശങ്കര്‍ സാറിന്റെ അസിസ്റ്റന്റ്‌ ആയി.  
നിമിഷ കവിയായ പ്രദീപ്‌ പാടി, മറ്റൊരു സീതയെ കാട്ടിലേക്കയക്കുന്നു.... ദുഷ്ടനാം ...

കാര്‍ത്തികയും ചാരുതയും മധുവും പിന്നെ അശോക്‌ മാധവനും  

 

1992 .  ഏഷ്യാനെറ്റ്‌-ന്റെ കോര്‍പ്പറേറ്റ് ഓഫീസ് വഴുതക്കാട് പോലീസ് കേന്ദ്രത്തിനു സമീപമുള്ള 

ഒരു വീടിന്റെ മുകള്‍ നിലയില്‍ ആയിരുന്നുവത്രേ. 

വീട്ടുടമയുടെ മകളെ നിങ്ങള്‍ അറിയും - മുന്‍ സിനിമാതാരം കാര്‍ത്തിക. സിനിമാതാരം റിയല്‍ ആയി മുറ്റം അടിക്കുന്നത് കാണാന്‍ ഉള്ള ഭാഗ്യം എനിക്കുണ്ടായില്ല. ഞാന്‍   ജോലിയില്‍ ചേരുമ്പോള്‍ ഓഫീസ് പണ്ഡിറ്റ്‌ കോളനിയില്‍ ഉള്ള ചാരുതയിലേക്ക് മാറിയിരുന്നു.

 

അന്ന് ഓഫീസില്‍ വിരലില്‍ എണ്ണാന്‍ ഉള്ള ജീവനക്കാര്‍ മാത്രം. ഇ വി ജി പോള്‍ സര്‍, ചന്ദ്രശേഖരന്‍ സര്‍, സതീഷ്‌, ബിജു, മഹേഷ്‌, സ്വാമി, പ്രസന്ന മദാം, രചന, സുലോചന, ജയന്‍ ചെറുകുന്നം, രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്‍, തിരുവല്ലം ബാബു - ഇവര്‍ ഓഫീസ് സ്റ്റാഫ്‌. എന്നെ ഞെട്ടിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് വരുന്നു കെ ജി മനോജ്‌, കൂടെ രണ്ടു കൃഷ്ണകുമാരന്മാര്‍, അനിലന്‍, ഗുരുജി എന്നീ സാങ്കേതിക കലാകാരന്‍മാര്‍. കെന്‍ മക് കരെ എന്നൊരു സായിപ്പും പി ആര്‍ എസ് നായര്‍ സാറും

 വല്ലപ്പോഴും വരുന്നവര്‍.  

 

ഓഫീസ് കലാകാരന്‍മാര്‍ താഴത്തെ നിലയില്‍. ഞങ്ങള്‍ സാങ്കേതികാര്‍ മുകളിലും. 

 

ഇടക്ക് പണം ചോദിക്കാന്‍ മധു സര്‍ വരും... അതെ, സിനിമ താരം മധു തന്നെ.  ഉമ സ്റ്റുഡിയോ യും ചുറ്റുമുള്ള റബ്ബര്‍ തോട്ടവും നമ്മള്‍ വാങ്ങിയിട്ട് പണം കൊടുത്തിട്ടില്ലത്രേ.  പോള്‍ സര്‍ അതൊക്കെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യും. 

കത്തി വെക്കുക, ചായ കുടിക്കുക എന്നീ പണികള്‍ മാത്രമേ ഉയര്‍ന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അന്ന് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു.

 

അശോക്‌ മാധവന്‍ എന്ന സാങ്കേതിക ജനറല്‍ മാനേജര്‍ (പുലി) വരുന്നതും നോക്കി  ഞങ്ങള്‍ കാത്തിരുന്നു ഞങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രമല്ല ..... എറണാകുളത്തു സ്ടീവി യും കൂട്ടരും, കോഴിക്കോട്ടു രമേഷും സൈന്യവും - എന്ന് വരും മദിരാശിയില്‍ നിന്ന് അശോക്‌ മാധവന്‍?  

Maliekan Cable Network

Another newspaper ad - a group of NRI Americans are setting up a state-wide cable TV network called MCN. They are now available in a hotel in Ernakulam, to sell franchises. The very same day  I caught the train and headed to Ernakulam and met the Wizards from US.

The MCN guys presented the Project using their laptop - I said LAPTOP in 1992, which was costing more than 1 acre land in then Kakkanadu - but regarding my technical queries, they said " we have an office in kottayam, which deals with tech aspects. Your queries will be answered there".

Next day I reached MCN Kottayam office in Baker Junction. Again another meeting of a life-time.

The person who was sitting with his back towards me, and his PC monitor facing me, with a picture of a huge dish antennae; turned in slow motion, his little eyes magnified 300X and protruded out of the soda glass, actioned me to sit, and asked -  are you Mr. Jayan Thomas, Nice to meet you, I am Steve Joseph.

MCN did not materialise. But later, Asianet was launched on the same format MCN had envisaged. Rumour is that, steve threatened the then VP of Asianet, late Mr. P.R Gopalan for IP (Intellectual Property) rights and in turn become the first Engineer of Asianet.

Prologue

April 14, 1992 - Vishu

The Vishu day in April 1992 carried prominent Ads  in leading dailies, announcing  the test launch of a private Malayalam Satellite Channel by PTI-TV. The new channel was named Asianet.

A freshly baked Engineer  working on a project in Indian Rare Earths, Chavara, told his colleagues, "if I was at my house, I could watch the telecast using my Engineering final year project, the Satellite Recieving System."

At the same time, a short, stout  and over-energetic nerd was struggling at Kanakakkunnu Palace ground in Trivandrum for setting up the reciever systems, and another tech geek, a long-haired lean jobless youth was watching the process with typical Trivandrum-style sarcasm.

The beaming was a success, much better than expected. First time in history, a private satellite TV signal carrying Malayalam language  waved across kerala, India, and most of this hemisphere.

The destiny was programmed for much more.... to join the above techies for the rest of their lifetime along with other geeks and nerds.

To the still suspecting reader, the onlooker was P.R Krishnakumar, The PTI-TV Engineer was Manoj K.G, my batchmate in Engineering college and then the employee of Teltronix; and the former,  The yours faithfully.

As I mentioned in the home page, this is not the history of Asianet. When fully developed, it could be the Elephant seen by the blinds. Hence I invite all blinds of X-Asianet to come up with Anecdotes, preferably on chronological order.
