April 14, 1992 - Vishu
The Vishu day in April 1992 carried prominent Ads in leading dailies, announcing the test launch of a private Malayalam Satellite Channel by PTI-TV. The new channel was named Asianet.
A freshly baked Engineer working on a project in Indian Rare Earths, Chavara, told his colleagues, "if I was at my house, I could watch the telecast using my Engineering final year project, the Satellite Recieving System."
At the same time, a short, stout and over-energetic nerd was struggling at Kanakakkunnu Palace ground in Trivandrum for setting up the reciever systems, and another tech geek, a long-haired lean jobless youth was watching the process with typical Trivandrum-style sarcasm.
The beaming was a success, much better than expected. First time in history, a private satellite TV signal carrying Malayalam language waved across kerala, India, and most of this hemisphere.
The destiny was programmed for much more.... to join the above techies for the rest of their lifetime along with other geeks and nerds.
To the still suspecting reader, the onlooker was P.R Krishnakumar, The PTI-TV Engineer was Manoj K.G, my batchmate in Engineering college and then the employee of Teltronix; and the former, The yours faithfully.
As I mentioned in the home page, this is not the history of Asianet. When fully developed, it could be the Elephant seen by the blinds. Hence I invite all blinds of X-Asianet to come up with Anecdotes, preferably on chronological order.
PS: I am highly inspired by the website, www.folklore.org, by Mr. Andy Hertzfeld and team on the creation of Macintosh by Apple.

ReplyDeleteIf i had my final year engineering project from NIT ( REC then) Surat, we wouldn't had an Asianet at all but just KSEB all the way..hehehehe. Mine was about PLC (power line comm) with a twist to carry broadband signals. Still a few Silicon Valley guys are working on it as we speak. some day it will come up and then all we need just a 'power plug" for every thing.
Now I know, why PRG was so adamant on his conditions to teach him a little bit about cable TV.:))) Manoj and his former boss much have made a fortune out of that contract job of launching the channel:) hehehehehehe. That must have drained the capital of the whole Asianet and remember, we were just doing nothing for a while until we get some unfortunate 'praanchisee's' to pay our salary!

എന്നും നോക്കി അന്നത്തെ പ്രവാസികളുടെ പുതിയ ബിസിനസ് സംരംഭം ആയ വീഡിയോ സെന്റെര് ന്റെ മുന്പില് വായും പൊളിച്ചു

സമയം വൈകുന്നേരം 6 മണി .... സ്ഥലം കനക്കുന്നു പാലസ്
തള്ളേ എന്തൊരു ജനം ....അതിനിടയില് കൂടി ഒരു തടിച്ച പൊക്കം കുറഞ്ഞ "പയല്"
വിയര്ത്തു കുളിച്ചു തെക്കോട്ടും വടക്കോട്ടും നടന്നു ഒരാവിശ്യവും ഇല്ലാതെ കൂടെ കൂടെ
ആകാശത്തേക്ക് നോക്കി താഴെ ഇരിക്കുന്ന കൊറെ കൊട കമ്പികള് വളച്ചു വച്ചത് പോലെ ഇരിക്കുന്ന
സാധനത്തിലെക്കെ അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും പിടിച്ചു തിരിച്ചു കളിക്കുന്നു ......
ഞാന് അപ്പോള് കൂടെ വന്നവനോട് പറഞ്ഞു .....മച്ചു ഇതാണോ ഇവന്മാരുടെ ഡിഷ് ആന്റിന ...കൊള്ളാം നല്ല ഭേഷ് ആയിട്ടുണ്ട് ..
ഇതില് കൂടി ഒരു കുന്തവും കിട്ടുമെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നില്ലാ ......
പക്ഷെ ..... കുറച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു ജിവിധത്തില് ആദ്യം ആയി " ശ്യാമ സുന്ദര കേര കേദാര ഭൂമി " എന്ന ഗാനം കേട്ടപ്പോള്
എന്റെ വിവരക്കേടും മണ്ടത്തരവും അഹങ്കാരവും എത്രത്തോളം ആയിരുന്നു എന്ന് ഞാന് മനസിലാക്കി .........
പാലസ് ന് പുറത്തു ഇറങ്ങിയപ്പോള് തടിച്ചു പൊക്കം കുറഞ്ഞ ആ മനുഷ്യന്റെ മുഖത്തെ ചിരി എനിക്കങ്ങു ഇഷ്ടമായി .....

മനോജ് കെ ജി യോടെ അപ്പോള് തോന്നിയ ആ സ്നേഹവും ബഹുമാനവും എപ്പോഴും അത് പോലെ തന്നെ നിലനില്ക്കട്ടെ ......

Balancing the amplifier made another Laddu to Explode..
ReplyDeleteAt that time... there are 4 or 5 channels, channel 2 and channel 4 in VHF-L and ramaining two in VHF-H.
When VHF-L gets clear, VHF-H will blurr, and when H gets clear, L get grains. Like the Thomman and chandy.
Another two wizards thought of this for long.. and made an amplifier never heard before - Low band pass amp, which will amplify only the high band. This was before the term Slope was printed in Indian tech-books.
And the wizards - Ramesh Ramakrishnan and Jayachandran Nair, both working for CATVISION then.
Inshah Allah I will introduce them in a better way another time.

ReplyDeleteAsk Shyam and Manu (?) and all those guys who were lucky enough to joined in the corporate office:) in Kochi. I still remember, when Shyam had came back later after few years, to help us with Palarivattam PAS headend build.He was insisted on me doing the whole thing alone!! just to piss me off:)))
For me, training somebody who don't know 'shit' is too easy. So it went just fine:) But i never did opened my mouth when Ramesh and KGM and KK etc around. So, no problama:))))
Speaking of them, you too did quite well in the design department later. One of the key person who established and drives the whole department, I would say. That was a great accomplishment indeed. Your prior knowledge in CATV came quite handy, i suppose. But, I guess Ajayan sir wanted a better person to manage it all and hence Rasheed came on board(?). You were always prefer to be silent and concentrate more on learning new stuff. Quite a contrast to my character, i guess? Good for you, Jaya. I am sure, it all paid well later?. Best wishes.
